Embedded commands allow suggestions to be subtly placed within a broader sentence structure. By adjusting vocal elements such as tone, speed, and volume, certain words or phrases can stand out, influencing the listener on a subconscious level.

Analog Marking

This technique, known in NLP as analog marking, leverages non-verbal cues to highlight specific parts of communication. Unlike digital communication (which relies on words), analog communication uses tone, gestures, and behavior—similar to how animals communicate.

By marking particular words non-verbally, the unconscious mind interprets them differently, recognizing them as important. This technique effectively directs attention and subtly reinforces suggestions.

Examples of analog marking include:

  • Vocal Emphasis: “My friend knows how to feel good about herself.” (Slightly altering the pitch, speed, or volume when saying feel good makes it more impactful.)
  • Gestures: “There’s no need to relax and go into a trance just yet.” (A hand movement could highlight relax and go into a trance.)
  • Body Language: “You can talk to me when you’re ready.” (Leaning forward slightly or making eye contact when saying talk to me can reinforce the message.)
  • Direct Commands: “John, sit down and relax.” (Using a firm, steady voice and a slight downward inflection makes this sound like an instruction rather than a request.)

The Difference Between a Question and a Command

For embedded commands to be effective, they must be delivered with the right vocal inflection. The way a sentence ends can change its entire meaning:

  • A question typically has a rising tone at the end (e.g., “You are going now?”).
  • A statement remains neutral in tone.
  • A command has a falling inflection, making it sound authoritative (e.g., “You are going now.”).

Some people unintentionally make statements sound uncertain by using a rising inflection: “I’ll finish the report by tonight?” This can make them appear hesitant or as if they are seeking approval. In contrast, a firm downward inflection conveys confidence and decisiveness.

By mastering embedded commands and analog marking, you can subtly influence communication and enhance the impact of your messages.
